Vermont Heating Oil
Keeping ‘The Green Mountain State’ Warm!
Vermont is in the northeastern United States, and is widely known for its natural, mostly forested, landscape. It’s also known for being home to more than 100 19th-century covered wooden bridges and has the highest percentage of maple trees in the country, making it a major producer of maple syrup.
In the fall, visitors flock to Vermont to witness the explosion of colors once the leaves begin to change from grees into hues of reds, oranges and yellows. In the winter, Vermont is a destination for skiers of all levels, boasting 20 alpine ski resorts, 30 cross-country touring centers and 7,300 acres of alpine terrain. There are 1,269 trails, 176 lifts, and 1,900 km of Nordic trails. In the warmer months lakes, waterways, public beaches and recreation trails make Vermont a great destination for the outdoor enthusiast in any season.
At the Ben and Jerry’s Factory you can learn how the founders met, conceived their dream and built their ice cream empire. Samples of whatever the factory is making at that moment are available, as are fresh cones. Afterwards you can tour the flavor graveyard, where retired concoctions are put to rest for all eternity (usually).
And, if the Ben and Jerry’s isn’t enough, you can visit Vermont’s Cabot Creamery which has been in operation since the close of the First World War. Although creamery tours are no longer being offered, you can still sample scores of cheeses, sour cream, and dips, from store-shelf classics to hard-to-find, aged cheddars at the visitors’ center.
And last on our list, in case you just miss being at work, you can visit the World’s Tallest Filing cabinet, a 38-drawer monument to organization. Each drawer in the structure represents the number of years of paperwork that the artist gathered while designing it. The piece is a commentary on the bureaucratic mess associated with a 50-plus year delay to a roadway meant to link downtown Burlington with the interstate.

Winters in Vermont
Winter officially begins in mid-December and ends in mid-March, at least according to the Calendar. However, the cold weather and snow can arrive sooner and stay much later. The amount of snow Vermont receives varies from winter to winter and from one region of the state to another. The lower elevations near Lake Champlain receive about 60 inches of snow each year. Up to 120 inches of snow may fall each year in the southern Green Mountains.
During even an average winter storm, there can be power outages. Vermont residents relying on electric heat are often without power for days, which is why many of them choose Keyser Energy out of Rutland, the local branch of HOP Energy to provide heating oil, generators, propane and emergency services. The large coverage area and size of Hop Energy ensures fast response times, reliable local service and competitive pricing, making them the leading provider of heating oil and energy services in Vermont.
Benefits of Heating Oil
Oil heat is one of the safest, most efficient means to heat you home. Home heating oil is a very stable, combustible, non-explosive product, which addresses some of the safety concerns that surround other fuels. The efficiency is a result of the high BTU content found in a gallon of oil, versus an equal measure of natural gas, propane, or electricity.
Safe – Heating oil is non-explosive and can only be ignited by the advanced systems found on furnaces.
Efficient and Economical –Modern Oil heat systems perform at 85-95% efficiency or higher. This means that for every dollar you spend on heating oil, up to 95 cents worth of heat and hot water is delivered into your home. Yearly heating costs for oil are consistently lower than natural gas or electricity. The Department of Ecology indicates that oil heats 16% more efficiently than natural gas.
Warmer– Because it burns at a higher temperature (300 degrees hotter than natural gas), heating your home with heating oil heats your home faster than any other heating source.
